BBQ sauce recipes have two schools of thought. Those that swear BBQ sauce ruin the BBQ (Mostly Texans) and those that are sure the sauce makes the BBQ. If you're from Texas you're excused now!
For the rest of us that believe barbecue sauce is an enhancement for barbecue let's take a look at some sauce recipes.

Within our sauce lover's circle there are still further divisions. The fact is that there are probably more recipes for BBQ sauce than there are for barbecue itself.
All sauce recipes have a base ingredient. The base is the main ingredient in the recipe. Depending on what region you are from that base could be vinegar, catsup, tomato sauce or even mayonnaise.
There may be other bases but those are the primary ones.
Vinegar based sauces are most popular in the Carolinas where they most probably originated. As you move further west the base changes to tomato products.
Even within those divisions there are other divisions. Whew! Barbecue sauce is complicated ain't it?
Onion and garlic are extremely popular as enhancements to the base ingredient. So are sweeteners and chile powders for heat. After those most anything but the kitchen sink is fair game for sauce ingredients.
